Position Summary

This position reports to the Manager of the program and is under the clinical supervision of Speech Language Pathologists within the program. The Communicative Disorders Assistant (CDA) assists in direct and indirect client care and program support of speech and language services for children. Services are delivered at multiple CTC sites, in childcare programs, community locations and schools.

Required

• Communicative Disorder Assistant Diploma (New Graduate applications are welcome)
• Experience as a CDA working with children with physical and developmental disabilities (experience in a clinical placement or volunteer setting and/or experience working with similar relevant paediatric populations may also be considered)
• Current CPR/BCLS certification (or willing to obtain within 3 months)
• Knowledge of children’s speech-language development, including that of children with physical and developmental disabilities.
• Knowledge of family centred care.
• Knowledge/experience in the delivery of speech and language services through multiple means (ie individual, group, virtual, parent training.)
• Knowledge/creativity in the development of augmentative communication materials (i.e. communication boards, theme boards, use of Board Maker etc.) and there use in treatment.
• Experience in working collaboratively with other team members.
• Organized (ability to manage caseload that includes multiple supervisors)
• Good time management skills
• Clear communication skills
• Availability to work extended hours
• Ability to travel to other sites.
• This position is primarily in-centre. Approval of any work from home will be at management’s discretion and may change over time.

Duties

• Provides direct client care through implementing speech-language pathology programs including individual, group, parent training, virtual services and screenings under supervision of the SLP.
• Assists in indirect client care including: scheduling of clients, preparing materials as requested, creating augmentative and alternative communication materials (i.e. communication books, picture boards, programming low tech devices), assisting in planning activities for individual and group sessions, supporting the client record.
• Assists in providing departmental support including organization, cleaning and storage of toys, materials and supplies, researching suppliers for specific tests, materials/resources as needed
• Completes clinical documentation and statistical reporting according to department protocol.
• Regular communication with supervising SLP’s regarding client’s progress.
• Participates in quality improvement activities as required
• Participates in public awareness and education activities related to speech and language services as requested
• Consistently demonstrate optimism, warmth, empathy, collaboration/support of clients and colleagues, continuous learning/improvement, willingness to take direction, and a strong work ethic.
• Take a child- and family-centered, strengths-based approach founded on the F-Words for Child Development
• Support families in a way that is culturally safe, responsive, and promotes equity, anti-oppression, anti-ableism, and anti- racism, including dismantling anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism.
• Demonstrate commitment to a tiered service delivery model to optimize resources and promote family self-efficacy
• Work collaboratively with children/youth/families, other team members and community partners to ensure a seamless, streamlined, and integrated service experience.
• Source and/or collaboratively develop appropriate educational and resource materials for children/youth/families.
• Participate in QCTC interdisciplinary teams, clinics, working groups and committees.
• Other duties, as assigned

Quinte Children’s Treatment Centre (QCTC) is one of 21 Children’s Treatment Centres in Ontario, providing a range of child development and rehabilitation supports for children and youth with special needs and their families. QCTC is part of Quinte Health, with segregated funding received from the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services. The centre offers a range of services to support child development and rehabilitation for children and youth with special needs, and their families. Services include rehabilitation supports (Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Speech Language Therapy) for preschoolers and school-aged children in home, school, and community settings; Social Work, Psychometry and Medical Services; System Navigation; Coordinated Service Planning; and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Workers. QCTC is an Autism Diagnostic Hub as well as a SmartStart Hub - a clear entry point to service for families and caregivers who are concerned about their child/youth’s development, and their day-to-day functioning related to development.
