Position Summary

Nursing Clinical Externs at Quinte Health are nursing students nearing the end of their education who are supported by a supervising nurse and work as unregulated health care providers to assist nurses in providing patient care. Working as a Clinical Extern at Quinte Health will allow you to apply nursing theory and knowledge you’ve gained so far to further develop your nursing competencies as you complete your education.

Required

• Enrolled in a Registered Nursing Program (RN) and entering the 3rd or 4th year of the Program or Enrolled in a Registered Practical Nursing Program (RPN) and entering the final year of the Program
• Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) who have initiated registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), have
received a CNO letter of direction and meet one of the following:
o are in any year of study in a CNO approved program, such as a BScN-IEN
program, PN-IEN program, or
o are completing a micro-credential plan with a curriculum to meet the CNO
requirements for registration (e.g., Standards of Practice for nursing, Entry-to-Practice Competencies, Evidence of Safe Practice, Evidence of English Language Proficiency) or
o have completed their educational requirements (e.g., BScN-IEN/PN-IEN program or micro-credentialing) and are waiting to write their registration exam.
• Current CPR or BLS certificate
• Recent experience in acute care is preferred.
• Evidence of good academic standing including one professional or academic nursing reference
• Capable of coping with a physically demanding workload. (Physical Demands Analysis (PDA) available to review)

Duties

• Practices under the direct and/or indirect supervision of a registered health care professional to ensure that they have the knowledge, skills and judgment needed to perform all actions/duties supporting direct patient care.
• Practicing in compliance with Quinte Health policy and procedures and best practices within the nursing profession.
• Maintains dignity and self‐esteem of patients and families in delivery of patient centered care
• Maintains nursing records, documentation within practice parameters in accordance with College of Nurses Standards.
• Adapts and adheres to the values of Quinte Health while promoting and advocating for an enhanced patient experience.
• Maintaining professional competence by completing regular professional development and education as indicated.
• Participates in unit/department, and Quinte Health quality improvement initiatives
• Adheres to a safe and healthy workplace and maintains a safe and healthy work environment through attendance at educational programs, use of established mechanisms for injuries and hazards and adheres to health and safety related policy and procedures.
• Request assistance with, consults and collaborates on assigned duties whenever necessary.
• Practice patient privacy and confidentiality
Assists the care team with:
• Provision of care for patients within an interprofessional environment, including assessment, teaching and education. Including, but not limited to:
○ Performs physical assessments and obtains vital signs measurements
○ Obtains ECGs and applies cardiac monitoring equipment
○ IV checks, assessment, discontinuing and removal, priming IV tubing
○ Provides catheter care, assessment, discontinuing and removal of urinary catheters
○ Use of bladder scanner and Doppler
○ Collecting specimen samples and swabs
○ Assists with discharge planning, including patient teaching
○ Performing simple dressings and removing sutures/staples
○ Health promotion, teaching and coaching to patients, care partners and families
○ Assists nursing staff with more complex procedures, not considered part of extern practice
○ Other care activities including:
• Hygiene activities including bathing, oral care, incontinence care
• Lifting, turning, positioning, transporting, and ambulating
• Provides preventative measures to decrease pressure injury and fall risk
• Set up meals and assistance with feeding
• Answer call bells, provide comfort measures, including intentional rounding and report changes or concerns to staff nurse
• Keep environment clean, tidy and free of hazards
• Stocking supplies, PPE, etc.
